007’s Identity Is Almost Decided: New James Bond Could Be Chosen This Weekend

After years of waiting, it now seems the moment to reveal the secret behind Bond’s identity, James Bond is finally approaching. Amazon is right around the corner from selecting the actor who will play the world’s most famous secret agent, a notion that has been circling for half a decade since Daniel Craig bid farewell to the character in No Time to Die. And it appears that this choice is closer than ever.

According to some internal sources within the company, this weekend will be the moment of truth. A handful of actors will come together to stake their claim for the role with an on-camera performance, and one of them will definitively win the part as decided by the executives. According to these reports, the pool of candidates is very small and there would be between three and five people prepared to audition for the role.

Details about the candidate actors are scarce, but rumors have circulated around two of them. Callum Turner, who in the past was pointed to as the favorite to assume the Bond role, would be among those few actors who had passed the final audition. Another name that carries strong resonance is Jack Lowden, probably one of the most surprising picks given his relatively short film career compared with Turner.

The actors who would not be in the running appear to be Jack O’Connell, one of the buzziest up-and-coming talents in recent months, nor Jacob Elordi. Nor should you expect something as groundbreaking as Idris Elba in the iconic role of the British agent, who already revealed that the idea of stepping into the part never even crossed his mind despite numerous rumors linking him to the role. A pity, just as it would have been fantastic to see Steven Spielberg direct one of the franchise’s installments.

Back to espionage

The next 007 film: James Bond will be directed by Denis Villeneuve and is expected to signal a fresh reset for the continuity of his story. The saga already hit the reboot button with its previous actor in Casino Royale in 2006, but now that the creative rights are in Amazon’s hands, it seems the time to restart from the beginning with the franchise’s flagship character has arrived.
