4 TV Series with Absurd Plots You Won’t Believe Were Written

Nowadays there are plenty of titles circulating across every genre, but how many of them are truly capable of leaving you speechless? If you’re tired of the usual tormented love stories or the classic intricate investigations, and you’re instead in search of a tale that makes a difference, then you’re in luck: below you’ll find a small list of TV series with a plot and a style that are so original and unique that you’ll wonder who could have conceived such an idea and how.

Unique TV Series: Here Are the Ones We Recommend

  • Severance
  • Jane the Virgin
  • Dark
  • The Good Place

Severance

Imagine arriving at your workplace only to suddenly forget who you are, who your family is, and what your hobbies are: from that moment, until you step outside at the end of the day, you will be nothing more than an employee. Once you leave, you will erase with a single stroke everything that happened in the office, returning to simply being yourself. This is essentially what happens in Severance, a 2022 TV series—still in production—where corporate routine becomes a waking nightmare. In fact, the employees of this enigmatic holding company have agreed to undergo a brain surgery to permanently separate their personal memories from their work memories. A dystopian thriller of genius. Two seasons and 19 episodes that you can watch on Apple TV+ or on Prime Video with an additional subscription.

Jane the Virgin

Jane is a devout Catholic young woman determined to keep a promise she made to her beloved grandmother, and thus to overcome a difficult challenge for a naive and in love teenager like her: to remain a virgin until marriage. However, during a routine gynecological check-up, she is accidentally inseminated and ends up pregnant by a wealthy playboy who, quite literally, is Jane’s teenage crush. Jane the Virgin is a 2014 series that started as a parody of Latin American telenovelas, and because of that—despite centering on the classic love triangle—it stands out as something truly unique. Five seasons and 100 episodes not to be missed, available on Netflix.

Dark

In a tranquil German town, a child disappears. As investigators dig deeper, they realize that to find him, one should not ask where he went but in which era he disappeared. Dark is a time-travel series, but it is also much more: a philosophical puzzle that forces viewers to think hard in order to understand what is really happening. The plot hinges on the Novikov self-consistency principle, which posits that the past is immutable, and thus the fate of each of us is trapped in a closed loop of the same events. Three seasons and 26 episodes that you can watch—and rack your brain with—on Netflix.

The Good Place

Those who believe, or at least hope, that after death they will end up in Paradise, even if in life they did not always behave as they should. Eleanor is a rather selfish and cynical young woman, far from a “saint”; yet when she dies in a strange accident, she does not end up in Hell as one might expect. Instead, she is welcomed into the Good Place due to a bureaucratic error in the afterlife. Eleanor must then take ethics lessons to become a better person and stay where she is. The Good Place is a 2016 series that appears to be a simple comedy at first glance, but in reality it is a brilliant show with one of the most memorable twists in television history. Four seasons and 50 episodes, available on Netflix.
