It took them more than a year to renew it, but they did so with a proposition that is more than powerful. The Hulu series ‘A Good American Family’, focused on recounting family crime cases from a fresh perspective, will have a second season following the success of the first in 2025. However, it won’t continue the story that was told from start to finish; instead, it will focus on another major case of family violence that shocked the world: the Lorena Bobbitt case.
The story the new season will adapt takes us back to 1993, to meet the Bobbit couple in Virginia, United States. The names of the two family members would be at the center of international headlines for the arrest of the wife, who one night woke up, grabbed a kitchen knife and cut off her husband’s penis and threw it outside the house. The trial that followed the events was a media drama that would stretch until 1995, when the couple finally divorced.
Average American Family
The Lorena Bobbitt case generated a lot of discussion in the thirty years that have passed since it happened. It was a case of female empowerment for some, as revenge for years of abuse and assaults by her husband, while for others it was a deranged woman who took justice into her own hands too far. Regardless of external opinions, the jury in the trial against her reached a not guilty verdict.
It should also be noted that John Wayne Bobbitt, Lorena’s husband, was able to recover his severed member after an emergency operation and a period of recovery. In fact, he did more than that, as he went on to appear in some pornographic films for a while. With facts like this and many more details of the case, there is certainly an interesting story to tell in the new season of ‘Una buena familia americana’.
New Direction
The most surprising aspect of the series is its decision to not continue the stories already established in the first season. Katie Robbins, creator of the series, will return as showrunner, but it seems she will do so without Ellen Pompeo, who starred in the Kristine Barnett storyline. Although one can never know: for now no cast member for the new season has been announced.
