A Long Winter: Trailer for Andrew Haigh’s New Film

Coming soon to cinemas at the start of 2027, with distribution by MUBI, is the new film from Andrew Haigh, the English director of beautiful movies such as Weekend and Estraenei: it is titled A Long Winter, and it is the adaptation — co-written by Haigh and the author — of the eponymous short story by the Irish writer Colm Tóibín. The film is set in 1950, among the snow-covered peaks of the Rocky Mountains, and tells the story of a boy named Mikey who must reckon with the disintegration of a family scarred by alcoholism and hardness when his mother suddenly leaves, leaving him alone with a younger brother who is about to go to war in Korea and with a stern, unaffectionate father.
For the role of this young lead, Haigh has chosen Fred Hechinger, one of the finest actors of his generation, seen recently in Thelma and Gladiator II, while Kit Connor from Heartstopper is cast as his brother Tommy. Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Bear) and Caitríona Balfe are the actors portraying the parents.
Here is the official trailer for A Long Winter.
