About a Hero: AI-Written Film Trailer Trained on Werner Herzog’s Films, Recreating His Voice

Let us now talk about a film that is also an experiment and that may (or intends to) generate a certain amount of confusion in the audience: About a Hero, a project by the Polish artist Piotr Winiewicz, which marks his debut, was created starting from a story generated by KASPAR, an artificial intelligence trained, with the director’s permission (you’ll hear it at the beginning of the trailer), on the work of Werner Herzog, whose voice is then artificially reproduced in the film. The subject created by the AI was developed as a screenplay by Winiewicz and Anna Juul. The story begins when a female worker named Dorem Clery is found dead under mysterious circumstances and an artificial Herzog travels to the town to investigate. Before giving you more details, we present you with the trailer.

About a Hero: a film that is an experiment

About a Hero is a blend of fiction and documentary, which, in addition to scenes of fiction, features interviews with artists, philosophers and scientists in what the creators describe as “a provocative conversation about authorship, originality and the limits of meaning created by the machine.” In a recent interview at the Venice festival where he presented Bucking Fastard, Werner Herzog spoke about the film and artificial intelligence with these words: “I am in favor of AI that replaces all the idiots who only repeat, repeat, repeat until nausea. When you reach nausea, please, please let the Artificial Intelligence do the work.” In About a Hero also appear Vicky Krieps, Stephen Fry and Imme Beccard.
