The whole world has gone crazy for Curry Barker and his Obsession, the first feature-length film from this American kid who has built a career and a training ground for his undeniable online talent, on YouTube, where together with his friend and creative partner Cooper Tomlinson they created a highly popular channel called “that’s a bad idea” that continually switches between deliriously funny sketches and horror shorts (like the notable The Chair and Milk and Serial, which we’ve talked about) that went viral and helped Barker catch the eye of Hollywood.
As you may know, Obsession is already available for rent and purchase on several digital platforms, and it should arrive for streaming on Netflix in November; in May 2027 Barker’s new film, Anything But Ghosts, will arrive in theaters, with early praise (Seth Rogen has seen it and said it’s even better than Obsession), while the director is already at work on a third film and also on yet another reboot of Don’t Open That Door.
And however, for horror fans’ delight to see something new from Barker, we won’t have to wait that long: the director announced that on Thursday, October 29, just hours before Halloween, a new short will debut on his YouTube channel: it is titled Mama Bear, and Barker wrote, directed and edited it (while the production design comes from Vivian Grey of Obsession).
The plot remains kept under wraps for now, but thanks to the cast list (which includes actors such as Jon Lee Richardson, Katie Sarife, Ericka Kreuz and Joshua Snyder), we know a doppelgänger is involved.
Judging by its sponsor, which in this case is Windows, Barker — accustomed to working on a very tight budget — shouldn’t have encountered particular budgetary constraints for the short.
Below you will find the Instagram post where Barker announces the short and the YouTube player that will allow you to watch Mama Bear.
