After Reacher, Neagley Too: Prime Video’s Spin-Off Decision Solidifies the Series’ Success

Following the recent renewal of Reacher for a sixth season, another piece of good news arrives for fans of the television universe based on Lee Child‘s novels. Prime Video has renewed Neagley for a second season. The series, a spin-off of Reacher starring Maria Sten, premiered on Prime Video on September 16, the same day the mother series’ fourth season wrapped up.

Neagley renewed for a second season: The success of the Reacher spin-off

According to data released by Amazon, the first season of Neagley drew 40 million viewers in the first 13 days of availability. The service also noted that Neagley is currently the fourth-most-watched debut of an original series in Prime Video history. Moreover, 52% of its audience comes from international markets, a figure that confirms the show’s strong reach beyond the United States.

Prime Video statements

Peter Friedlander, head of global television at Amazon MGM Studios, commented on the renewal, underscoring the success of the character portrayed by Maria Sten: “Worldwide audiences have welcomed Frances Neagley as a force capable of shining on her own. Maria Sten delivers a confident and nuanced performance that drives every episode, while Nick Santora and Nicholas Wootton have built a world that is at once thrilling and engaging. We are excited to continue this story and to explore what lies ahead for Neagley together with our partners at Paramount Television Studios.”

Plot: Maria Sten returns as Frances Neagley

At the center of the spin-off is once again Frances Neagley, a character who had already appeared in the series Reacher. A former member of the U.S. Army’s 110th Special Investigations and one of Jack Reacher’s closest allies during his time in the service, Neagley has left the service and now works as a private investigator in Chicago. In the first season, her life changes when she discovers that a dear friend from the past died in what appears to be a suspicious accident. Convinced there is more to his death, Neagley decides to investigate and seek justice. To do so, she can rely on the skills she honed during military service and on what she learned from Jack Reacher, played by Alan Ritchson. The actor also appeared in the first season in a guest role.

The series thus expands the Reacher universe by focusing on a protagonist who shares with the former military police officer a strong sense of justice, but who also possesses a personality and a path of her own. The character is made even more distinctive by haphephobia, or a pronounced fear of being touched or touching others.

The cast of the spin-off

Besides Maria Sten, in the first season appear Greyston Holt as detective Hudson Riley, Adeline Rudolph as Renee, Jasper Jones as Keno, Matthew Del Negro as Pierce Woodrow, and Damon Herriman as Lawrence Cole. The presence of Alan Ritchson also helps maintain the direct link to Reacher, even though the spin-off is built to work as an autonomous, Neagley-centered story.

What do we know about the second season?

As mentioned, the renewal comes just days after news of Reacher‘s sixth season, while the fifth season of the series starring Alan Ritchson is still in production. At the moment, Prime Video has not yet announced details about the plot, release date, or the cast makeup for the new Neagley season. Maria Sten’s return as Frances Neagley is certain, but it remains to be seen what the private investigator’s next mission will be.
