Just as you have come to know the talent of the Korean actor Lee Byung-hun through his portrayal of the Front Man in the cult series Squid Game, and have since appreciated his versatility even more in No Other Choice, here comes good news, delivered by Variety, announcing him as the lead in a film directed by the series’ creator, Hwang Dong-yuk (his first in almost ten years), titled K.O. Club, with filming scheduled for the early months of 2027. And judging by the plot, which reimagines the director’s sociopolitical themes within a thriller framework, there is indeed much to celebrate.
K.O. Club: The film that reunites Lee Byung-hun with Hwang Dong-yuk
The cast of K.O. Club also includes Park-Hae-soo (the Player 218, childhood friend of the protagonist in Squid Game), Oh Jung-se, Cho Yeo-jeong, and Kim So-jin, the latter two directed by Hwang for the first time. The story unfolds in a near-future setting where wealth can buy biological youth, pitting an aging elite of the rich and powerful against a younger generation that lacks their privileges. By the way, K.O. Club is an acronym for Killing Oldmen Club, the meaning—“the club of Old Men Killers”—is fairly explicit and again places at the heart of the narrative a theme that is especially dear to the director: the enormous economic and social gap between classes in Korea, which was also central to Squid Game. The film is produced by Firstman Studio and marks Hwang Dong-yuk’s comeback to cinema, his last feature being the historical drama The Fortress in 2017. We can begin awaiting this new undertaking right away.
