Afterlife with Archie Twist: KJ Apa’s Surprise Candidacy Emerges

Can you imagine Riverdale but in a The Walking Dead style? Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa can, and indeed he has proposed a new TV series called Afterlife with Archie that will tell a horror version set in a Riverdale overrun by zombies. Born as an independent project from Riverdale, which lasted seven seasons, and slated to stream soon on Disney+, Afterlife with Archie has captured the interest of fans and also of KJ Apa, who in Riverdale played Archie Andrews and would like to be involved again.

Afterlife with Archie brings fans back to Riverdale but in horror twist, and KJ Apa wants in

KJ Apa owes much of his rising fame to Riverdale, drawn from the Archie Comics and running for seven seasons, an experience that launched his career and that he would like to replicate in some way. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who created Riverdale, is at work on a new horror story titled Afterlife with Archie, based on the eponymous comics.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, KJ Apa revealed that he had spoken with Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and made himself available: “I spoke with Roberto, who was our showrunner for Riverdale and who is now also showrunner of this new TV series. I’m really excited about it. I can’t wait to find out who they’ll choose to portray Archie and his gang. It would be nice if we could do some cameos or something like that. I asked him.” The actor’s words hint at what fans had already suspected: Afterlife will be set in Riverdale, but it will have new performers attached to the beloved characters. The plot, after all, reimagines the city already known to many and presents it in a horror key, an apocalyptic hell invaded by zombies.

Regarding his possible return, KJ Apa admitted that he does not have a precise idea: “I think it would be really fun if I could cameo in a scene. I don’t know who I would play, but it would be fun to do it. I know Roberto is really, really excited about it.” Today the actor enjoys life post‑Riverdale: “I feel less awkward when I’m out on the street. In the Riverdale days, if I walked down the street and saw teenagers coming back from school or somewhere else, I’d head in another direction, because I knew it would be chaos. Now it’s not like that anymore. Despite all the discussions surrounding the show and what each of us lived individually in our lives, that show was the reason for many opportunities I’ve had in my life and I am deeply grateful. I will never try to deny it,” he concluded.
