Anne Hathaway Wants Julie Andrews Back in The Princess Diaries 3

The kingdom of Genovia could be facing its greatest crisis yet. We all know that ‘The Princess Diaries 3’ will arrive in some form, but the conditions under which Mia Thermopolis’s third adventure will unfold are another matter. Right now, the biggest obstacle that could define the project as a whole is the potential absence of Julie Andrews, a figure central to the previous installments.

The reason that leads us to think this way comes from the actress herself, who recently stated that she didn’t think she ought to be part of the new movie. It isn’t an outright refusal to join, but it speaks to Andrews’ intentions, especially given her age. However, if anyone has something to say about it, it is Anne Hathaway herself, who wants to have her presence no matter what.

Anne Hathaway perhaps must face a world in which she has no queen in ‘The Princess Diaries 3’ (Disney)

In an interview granted after her appearance at the D23, Hathaway explains that, above all, she will respect the decision Andrews makes in the end. “First of all, I just want to say that, if she changes her mind, we are willing [to have her]. Anything, really. But we also want to be respectful. For the love of God, if there is someone who has contributed to the world of entertainment and to our collective joy, that is her. Whatever it is she wants, we understand it perfectly tenfold.”

After this wave of positive words toward the legendary actress, Hathaway explained that she did everything possible to bring her on board for the original project. “We pressed hard to see if she was interested,” she assured, leaving unclear what steps she took to attract the actress. It seems there isn’t much more room to persuade her, although she will keep hoping that she changes her mind and finally appears in the saga’s third installment.

A Surprising Sequel

Honestly, Andrews’s presence is not essential to move forward with a third installment. The queen has already ceded the throne to her rightful daughter in the second film after managing to abolish the law that forced her to marry, so the movie should not hinge on a similar political matter. However, her role is so iconic that her involvement in the saga’s future remains highly significant.
