The Wanda Trilogy is nearly at its end, but it may not be the final word. It was showrunner Terry Matalas who spoke about possibilities after VisionQuest, stepping in after Jac Schaeffer who previously guided the WandaVision debut on Disney+ and the spin-off Agatha All Along. VisionQuest is the third and seemingly last chapter of this television interlude nicknamed the Wanda Trilogy, but could there be room for additional spin-offs?
After VisionQuest, what will happen to the MCU on TV? Terry Matalas addresses new possible spin-off ideas
As with all great Marvel talents, Terry Matalas keeps his lips sealed, or at least he tries. In keeping with the Studios’ secrecy, the showrunner reflected on potential narrative developments after VisionQuest: could some of these characters soon take center stage in new spin-offs? “I can’t talk too much. I would wish for nothing more than to keep playing in this universe. Vision, Ultron and the Maximoff family have become part of my DNA. They are at the beating heart of me,” he revealed to Screen Rant.
He added: “There are other characters who are extremely important to me in the MCU, so I wouldn’t wish for anything else but to continue working with Marvel. It is and continues to be an incredible collaboration with all of them.” At that moment, a project about Young Avengers: The Children’s Crusade drawn from the eponymous comic was proposed, and he said he was open to it: “Depends on the Marvel boss. But I’d love to do something like that,” he revealed, bringing Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, into the conversation.
After all, tackling a Young Avengers project would also involve members of the Maximoff family: “I would really enjoy it. As long as the rest of the family could participate, and that could include Ultron. Again, there’s nothing on the schedule, but I would love it very much.” In WandaVision, Wanda and Vision started a family, welcoming the twins Tommy and Billy. By the end of the miniseries, Wanda had lost her children, believing they were merely the product of her spell, but it later turned out that wasn’t the case. Obsessed with the idea that her kids were trapped in the Multiverse, Wanda became the villain of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, self-destructing along a path that concluded in a malevolent fashion. In Agatha All Along, we learn that Wanda was right: her son Billy is alive and has crossed paths with Agatha Harkness, discovering his true potential and setting his next target: finding his brother Tommy. The latter is involved in VisionQuest and portrayed by Ruaridh Mollica.
It remains unclear what will happen after VisionQuest, not least because Marvel Studios has thus far announced only a handful of live-action TV projects in development, including the third and final season of Daredevil: Rebirth slated for 2027 and Zodiac due out in 2028. Delving deeper into the stories of younger characters such as Wiccan and Billy would be advantageous at this stage of the MCU, especially to introduce the Young Avengers, bringing in other young heroes like Ms. Marvel, Kate Bishop, Ironheart and Cassie Lang. Will Kevin Feige heed Terry Matalas’s call?
