Coming to our cinemas soon as well, thanks to I Wonder Pictures, Artificial by Luca Guadagnino has just emerged with a trailer: considering that it tells the birth of ChatGPT and its creator Sam Altman, brought to the screen by Andrew Garfield, one can bet we will hear a lot about it in the coming weeks and months, as often happens with biopics so closely tied to our everyday reality. It only took a trailer to spark the first reactions: one came from Jack Altman, Sam’s younger brother.
Artificial, Andrew Garfield’s Sam Altman is realistic only in one aspect, says Jack Altman
We haven’t had the chance yet to see Artificial by Luca Guadagnino, but already a seemingly authoritative source (though clearly biased) has shared its view on how Andrew Garfield portrays Sam Altman, the creator of ChatGPT and the current CEO of OpenAI. This comes from Jack Altman, an investor and entrepreneur, Sam’s younger brother. In a first take, after watching the film’s trailer, he wrote on X with irony: “I swear, you all know there’s nothing in the world that would amuse me more than a movie that makes fun of my brother. Unfortunately, judging from this teaser, I think they got only the walking right.” Artificial had a rather turbulent journey toward its final release: it was slated to be distributed in the USA by Amazon MGM Studios, as was Guadagnino’s previous collaboration with Garfield (After the Hunt), but the system stalled when Amazon invested $50 billion in OpenAI, creating a conflict of interest. The North American release was subsequently picked up by Neon, which will bring it to theaters for a Christmas premiere, with a regular release in January. I Wonder Pictures will handle the Italian distribution, on a date that has not yet been announced.
In the cast of Artificial there are also Yura Borisov (Ilya Sutskever, chief scientific officer and co-founder of OpenAI), Monica Barbaro (Mira Murati, CTO of OpenAI) and Cooper Hoffman (Greg Brockman, chairman of OpenAI).
