Disney understands how crucial the success of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is, and the project begins and ends with the formidable antagonist that gives the film its name: Doctor Doom. Consequently, the latest trailer for the feature presented at D23 focused exclusively on the figure of Victor von Doom, the misunderstood new foe of the Avengers.
In this trailer, which you can watch below, Vanessa Kirby recounts the tragedy that befalls the man who was once considered a good friend. It explains his transformation from a kind man to the monster who now threatens to destroy entire universes for motives still unknown. Not even Thor’s full power can stand against the ruler of Latveria, who ultimately rises with the power of a god, wielding the machines that the X-Men once feared: an army of Sentinels.
Long Live Doom
The great arch-enemy of the Fantastic Four was not the threat they confronted in Marvel Studios’ first film, but his appearance in the post-credits scene of ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ turned the world on its head. We couldn’t see his face at that moment nor in any of the trailers, but that he is being portrayed by Robert Downey Jr., who brought Iron Man to life in the first three phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, should give us a hint of where the tragedy from his past is headed.
In the comics, the good Victor von Doom has no relation to Tony Stark. He is an astonishing scientist, engineer, and sorcerer all at once, who leads an entire nation with an iron fist and whose intentions are always described as gray. There remains much to learn about how this version will take shape, but it seems that his genius and command of the dark arts will stay as the element that makes him special. He already surpasses what the previous adaptations of the character achieved in ‘The Fantastic Four’ and ‘Fantastic Four’ (the 2015 film).
Everything Points to Secret Wars
In Marvel’s D23 panel there hasn’t been any mention of the next film from Earth’s mightiest heroes, but everything suggests the story will continue with ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ in 2027. In the comics, it is when Doctor Doom truly began to shine as the main antagonist, elevated to the level of a god and with a perfect world created by his will that, surely, pits all the Avengers and more against him.
