Berlin sinks into chaos in the Italian trailer for the fifth and final season of Babylon Berlin, available exclusively on Sky and streaming only on NOW from November 10. It’s January 1933, and the city is about to endure five weeks that will alter history, from Hitler’s rise to Chancellor to the election day, with the Reichstag fire moving into the backdrop. Inspired by Volker Kutscher’s fifth novel in the saga, Berlin Burning, the final act — four years after the prior season of the acclaimed German series — follows Charlotte Ritter as she pursues a new and dangerous investigation, while Gereon Rath vanishes suddenly.
Babylon Berlin 5: the plot of the final season
Since 2017, Babylon Berlin has told the story of Gereon Rath (portrayed by Volker Bruch), a police inspector who arrives from Cologne to probe a blackmail case connected to pornography, and of Charlotte Ritter (Liv Lisa Fries), a young stenographer who dreams of becoming a detective. Their investigations lead them into a dark world of corruption, political intrigue, organized crime, and conspiracies. Set against a vibrant yet decadent Berlin, with cabarets, social tensions, and ideological clashes, the series depicts a society on the brink of change, where the fragilities of democracy pave the way for the rise of Nazi extremism.
It is January 30, 1933. With Hitler’s appointment as Reich Chancellor, the darkest chapter in German history begins. Charlotte investigates a string of murders targeting former frontline soldiers. The links and motives trace back to 1918. A dossier that sheds new light on the period when Hitler served as a soldier in World War I has disappeared. It is politically incendiary material, and those involved seem prepared to do anything to get their hands on it… even to kill. When Gereon suddenly vanishes without a trace, Charlotte wonders if she will ever see him again.
The cast of the fifth season also includes Peter Kurth, Matthias Brandt, Hannah Herzsprung, Karl Markovics, Lars Eidinger, Sebastian Urzendowsky, and Christian Friedel. The eight episodes are written and directed by Tom Tykwer (Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, Waiting for the King), and Henk Handloegten.
