If you enjoy Viking tales, you’ll be pleased to learn that Michael Hirst, the creator of the acclaimed Vikings, will return to tell them in the new Prime Video series Bloodaxe. The show’s arrival on screens is planned for the early months of 2027, and for now you can catch a glimpse of the two leads — the warrior Erik Haraldsson and his wife Gunnhild, played by Australian actor Xavier Molyneux and the Bridgerton actress Jessica Madsen — in the first official photos released by the streaming service.

The rest of the cast includes Karlis Arnolds Avots, Levi Miller, Rod Hallett (Prime Target), Alina Tomnikov, Sisse Marie (Rebel Moon), Rune Temte (Time Bandits) and Jesper Christensen (Spectre). They portray respectively Egil, a poet, farmer, assassin, sorcerer and rake who seeks revenge on Erik for the exile of his family in Iceland at the hands of his father; Athelstan, the cunning and powerful King of Wessex, also a formidable warrior; Greta, a trusted member of Erik’s inner circle with the ability to transform into an ancient woman known as The Seer, endowed with omniscient power and the ability to foretell the future; Thyra, the Queen of Denmark, mother of Gunnhild, a figure admired, shrewd, and resolute; Gorm, the King of Denmark, sharp and sly, but lacking the swagger and madness prized by many Norsemen, though his calculating, diplomatic, and sometimes brutal approach to power has made him one of the most formidable forces in Scandinavia; and King Harald Bluetooth, the first king of all Norway, who after defeating numerous powerful rivals nears the end of his legendary reign.
