Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo Trailer From Japan for Takashi Miike’s New Film

At the Venice Film Festival, which has just wrapped up with the triumph of Woman Unknowns, Takashi Miike — one of the pivotal figures in both contemporary Japanese cinema and world cinema — unveiled a very beautiful documentary devoted to the art of Kabuki theatre, titled Shumei. The living legacy of Kabuki. Regarding Toronto, which is still taking place, Miike is currently presenting another film, a work of fiction that is completely different. This one is different: Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo, a noir set in the Japanese capital that, as the title suggests, stands as the third entry in an informal series that began in 1992 with The Bad Lieutenant, directed by Abel Ferrara, and continued in 2009 with the wild and wonderful The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, directed by Werner Herzog with Nicolas Cage delivering a highly spirited performance.
This new film tells the story of a new police officer who isn’t exactly paragons of virtue, portrayed by Shun Oguri, who will slide deeper and deeper into a world of corruption, addiction, and violence as he is compelled to team up with a mysterious FBI agent (Lily James) and with a former Yakuza seeking revenge in order to investigate the kidnapping of the heiress of a very wealthy American family.
Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo will soon debut in U.S. theaters distributed by NEON, while there is still no news regarding a possible and desirable distribution in Italy. In the meantime, this is the first official trailer (Japanese) for the film.
