Before Resident Evil: Zach Cregger Recalls His First Hilarious Encounter With Austin Abrams for Weapons (Video)

If there is, as people like to say today, a bromance that we really love, it’s the one between Zach Cregger and the stunning lead of his Resident Evil, Austin Abrams. We’ve seen the two talk about the film in numerous interviews and we’ve understood that between the director and the actor there was an instant chemistry rarely found in cinema, which has blossomed into esteem and friendship. So, among tales that reveal how in the incredible zombie‑rain scene Abrams almost got struck by one of those gigantic and incredibly heavy bags of “blood,” and other behind‑the‑scenes moments from one of the most original and well‑made films of recent times, there was also a chance to learn (Cregger was keen to point out) how the two first met. In the interview below, in which Zegger involves Abrams, he says he had summoned him to offer him the role of the drug addict in Weapons and that they had agreed to talk about it over lunch.

What he did not expect at all is that the actor, for what was simply a get‑to‑know‑you meeting and not a real audition, would arrive completely immersed in the part, to the point that the director almost believed it and was left disoriented by his behavior: (he was wearing) a dirty T‑shirt, avoiding direct eye contact and being very restless. And I was there trying to offer him a job. And he, “yeah, man.” So much that I thought “he seems like a difficult guy, but at least he has the perfect look.” And in the end, almost at the end of lunch, I told him, “okay, I think I’ll give you this role” and I remember that he stepped out of character and said “Really???” seeing these two crack up with laughter as they recall the meeting that would open Abrams’ doors to his first major leading role, is priceless and these are not scenes you often see in the world of cinema, so we’re really glad that that unusual meeting went well.
