Liane Moriarty is back with Jane, Celeste, and Madeline, at the heart of a new adventure told in a new novel titled Big Little Truths, which, according to the author, could influence quite a bit the plot of the forthcoming season of Big Little Lies. Launched in 2017 and subsequently continued in 2019 with a second season, the TV series has benefited from the support of David E. Kelley and from a cast led by Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon and Shailene Woodley. Since then, the public hopes and awaits a third season, but the premature passing of director and executive producer Jean-Marc Vallée halted development. Now, the author of the novel that inspired the TV series has published a new sequel volume that could influence the third season. Here is what we know about it.

In an interview with E!News, Liane Moriarty explained that the producers of Big Little Lies (including David E. Kelley, Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman) have read her new novel Big Little Truths: “They said positive things.” Then, regarding the television adaptation, she added: “I am absolutely sure there will be huge changes.” She further clarified that a third season “is definitely in active development and I’m excited about it.”
Regarding the start of filming, she hopes that it will begin “as soon as possible,” but the commitments of the lead cast could hamper the schedule, given that the stars involved are among Hollywood’s most beloved (such as Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern and Zoe Kravitz).
Big Little Truths is the direct sequel to Big Little Lies, published twelve years after the previous installment. The author, speaking to E!News, explained why she initially had no intention of offering a new novel: “Even though I had a vague idea, at a certain point I wanted to write about teenagers. I clearly remember when Reese Witherspoon told me, right at the beginning, that people wanted a sequel, but my response was absolutely no. Since I had never written a sequel before, and given that it would create a whole cascade of drama for the characters, I didn’t want to think: ‘Okay, now I have to invent an entirely new set of problems,’ so I said no.”
She changed her mind when Big Little Lies pursued a second season. At that point she realized she wanted to write another novel, but one focused on an adolescent version of the protagonists: “I started writing a book set in a high school with an entire cast of characters, and then everything came back to me—the desire for a third season. And suddenly I thought: ‘You know what? I could really tell that story to the teens of Big Little Lies’.” The sequel Big Little Truths is set about ten years after the first novel and follows Celeste, Madeline and Jane as they cope with their now-teenage children and, as the synopsis states, with the arrival of a stranger in town that forces the protagonists to dredge up secrets from their past.
