Paramount is ready to give its toys the big screen they deserve. The G.I. Joe franchise is already laying the groundwork for its soldiers to conquer movie theaters, and the details of its next feature are gradually taking shape. The juiciest bit concerns its lead, who will be portrayed by the charismatic Bradley Cooper.
According to media outlets, Cooper has read the film’s script and has met with director Danny McBride to turn the project into reality. Negotiations reportedly began a few weeks ago and are expected to be finalized soon, but both sides are said to be highly eager to work together to start production as soon as possible.
The New Duke
Although not officially announced, all signs point to this new installment being a reboot that would push the command’s story in a new direction. The main proof is that Cooper would play Duke, one of the most popular characters from the eighties animated series, a role previously portrayed by Channing Tatum in the earlier films.
These plans would coincide with reports from a year ago that what was set to be the fourth installment, a Transformers crossover, had been halted by certain circumstances. That project isn’t officially canceled, but it seems it’s not a priority for Paramount, and they prefer to offer a new continuity that serves as a starting point before aliens and space robots team up.
Cooper can Do It All
Bradley Cooper is riding a remarkable stretch in his career. Outside of this project he is now involved as a director in the production of the new Ocean’s movie, a prequel that will also star him alongside Margot Robbie. Even with this responsibility on his shoulders, he has carved out time in his busy schedule to express interest in the G.I. Joe project, which in the United States is a childhood icon for many eighties kids.
The revival of the franchise marks a major step for Hasbro’s long-term plans, which have aimed for years to realize their own cinematic universe. ‘Transformers’ has already seen multiple adaptations, but in its roadmap they have previously contemplated films based on Micronauts, Visionaries and ROM. We’ll see if these projects gain traction with the return of ‘G.I. Joe’.
