For Buffy fans, it’s time to return to Sunnydale, at least for one night. Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz, the iconic Buffy Summers and Angel of the cult series, are indeed expected to appear together on the stage of the 78th Emmy Awards, scheduled for September 14. The news comes from NBC and the Television Academy’s joint announcement, which revealed the first group of presenters for the ceremony. Mariska Hargitay, the longtime star of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, will instead host the evening. But what should we expect from this reunion and what other surprises are planned for the night?
Buffy: The reunion on the occasion of its 30th anniversary
For Gellar and Boreanaz, the reunion is particularly meaningful. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is approaching its 30-year milestone since its premiere, which will fall in March 2027. The series, which over the years became a true generational phenomenon, has told the tormented romance between Buffy, the vampire slayer played by Gellar, and Angel, the vampire with a tormented human soul brought to the screen by Boreanaz. Boreanaz’s presence at the Emmys will also carry a double significance: the actor will also star in promoting NBC’s new series The Rockford Files, a reboot of the eponymous classic TV show known in Italy as Agenzia Rockford. In the new version Boreanaz plays James Rockford, a private investigator newly released from prison after serving a sentence for a crime he did not commit.
Not only Buffy: the other Emmy reunions
The Emmy night, however, also promises other reunions. Among the announced names are Kate Jackson, Jaclyn Smith and Cheryl Ladd, the stars of Charlie’s Angels. Their presence should celebrate the 50th anniversary of the series, which hit television screens in 1976. Jackson and Smith were part of the original trio along with the late Farrah Fawcett, while Ladd joined the cast after the first season, taking Fawcett’s place. On stage will also return two beloved stars of Schitt’s Creek, Dan Levy and Annie Murphy. The two could take part in a tribute to their late colleague Catherine O’Hara, who passed away recently, together with Macaulay Culkin, who in the famous Home Alone saga played her son.
Emmy 2026: All the stars expected on stage
Among the presenters will also be Zendaya, a two-time Emmy winner for Euphoria, while from the cast of DTF St. Louis are expected Linda Cardellini and David Harbour, both already Emmy-winning in the categories of Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress in a Miniseries, moved this year out of the main ceremony. The lineup also includes Sally Field, nominated for an Emmy for Creature Luminous, and Alan Cumming, fresh off a new win for hosting the reality show The Traitors on Peacock.
NBC will also seize the evening to showcase some of its biggest names. In addition to Mariska Hargitay and David Boreanaz, on the stage will rise Peter Krause, star of the new drama Line of Fire, Amy Poehler, at the center of the new Peacock comedy Dig, Keke Palmer, star of The ‘Burbs, and Marcello Hernández, one of the prominent faces of Saturday Night Live. Completing the first group of presenters are Rachel Sennott and Odessa A’zion, stars of I Love LA, Jon Hamm and Amanda Peet from Your Friends and Neighbors, Niecy Nash-Betts and Julianna Margulies and Florence Pugh, star of the upcoming Netflix miniseries The Valley of Eden.
Where to watch the Emmys in Italy
The 78th edition of the Emmy Awards will be broadcast live from the United States from the Peacock Theater on September 14, on NBC and Peacock. For Italian audiences, the event is set for the night between Monday, September 14 and Tuesday, September 15, with the ceremony airing live exclusively on Sky Atlantic and streaming on NOW.
