Calcinacci: Exclusive Fulminacci Interview (With a Surprise) on the Short Film That Blends Music and Cinema

After the success at Sanremo with Stupida Sfortuna, Fulminacci certainly did not stop. The Roman singer-songwriter, legally known as Filippo Uttinacci, returned to tell his story with Calcinacci, his new album which found a cinematic extension in Calcinacci (Extended Version), a 35-minute mid-length film that goes well beyond the traditional concept of a music video. Following a cinema run, with three appearances across Italy last March, the film was presented on October 24 at the Sistina Theatre during the Rome Film Festival, among the special screenings outside the cinema of the parallel section Alice nella città. For the occasion, we at ComingSoon.it spoke with the singer-songwriter, producer Antonio Giampaolo, and Lorenzo Silvestri, one of the film’s directors, to delve into the genesis of a work that intertwines music and cinema, expanding the narrative universe of the album.

Calcinacci, from the album to the cinema: exclusive interview with Fulminacci, Antonio Giampaolo and Lorenzo Silvestri

Directed by Lorenzo Silvestri, Andrea Santaterra and Filiberto Signorello, Calcinacci is written by Fulminacci, Giovanni Nasta and the directors themselves. The protagonist is Filippo Uttinacci, aka Fulminacci, supported by a cast that includes Pietro Sermonti, Francesco Montanari, Franco126, Tutti Fenomeni, Elena Funari, Brando Pacitto, Giovanni Nasta and Adriano Achille Cesaroni, as well as Golden Years. At the heart of the story is a journey through an unpredictable Rome (which could actually be “somewhere in Italy,” quoting the title of one of the album’s tracks), amid small daily disasters, chance encounters and characters who leave something with the protagonist. A bittersweet tale that reflects on some recurring themes in Fulminacci’s poetics: the fragility of balances, change, the things we lose and those we regain. Just like rubble, fragments of something that has broken but can become the starting point to build something new.

Calcinacci (Extended Version) is a production by Anemos, presented by Maciste Dischi and Warner Records, with Antonio Giampaolo as producer and Maciste Dischi as associate production. The cinematography is by Leonardo Mirabilia, the editing by Gianluca Conca, the production design by Claudia Tozzi and Gaia Sanmartino, and the costumes by Alessia Cipolletta.

Pietro Sermonti makes a surprise cameo during the interview!

In our interview, which you can see below, we spoke with Fulminacci, Antonio Giampaolo and Lorenzo Silvestri about the ideas behind the project, the relationship between the songs and the imagery, and the choice to create a true cinematic work that, who knows, might perhaps be just the starting point for something more expansive, such as a TV series. The music, signed by Fulminacci and Golden Years, helps to make the songs an integral part of the narrative, while the performances by guests from the worlds of cinema and music enrich the story. Our chat also yielded an unexpected sidestep. Just as we were conducting the interview, Pietro Sermonti happened to stroll through the ComingSoon spaces, where he was there for another junket. His surprise appearance gave rise to a curious and entertaining moment with our guests, delivering a scene to remember.
