The news arrived somewhat unexpectedly: Prime Video has decided not to renew Run or Die (Ride or Die) for a second season. The series, which debuted on the platform on July 15, 2026 with all eight episodes, seemed to have all the prerequisites to continue. Yet, despite a very positive start and a steady presence in streaming charts, Amazon’s streaming service chose to halt the story of Judith and Debbie, portrayed by Hannah Waddingham and Octavia Spencer.
The Run or Die viewership does not explain Prime Video’s decision
The decision raises several questions, especially because the publicly available data does not seem to narrate the arc of a series in trouble. On the contrary, Run or Die received excellent feedback from both critics and audiences. The viewership figures were far from disappointing, as the title quickly carved out a prominent place in the platform’s rankings. Subsequently, the series appeared in the Luminate and Nielsen lists. It also remained in the Top 10 of the most-watched originals for five consecutive weeks across all streaming platforms. The most significant data point concerns the week of August 3–9, when the series totaled 506 million minutes of viewing, landing in fifth place on Nielsen’s ranking of streaming originals.
On Rotten Tomatoes, Run or Die had reached 96% among critics, while the audience score stood at 85%. The series had thus earned a positive reception from both sides, without the usual gap between critics’ enthusiasm and viewers’ interest. So, what could have driven Prime Video to forgo a second season?
Why did Prime Video cancel the series with Octavia Spencer and Hannah Waddingham?
If the ratings and reception do not appear to offer a sufficient explanation, there remains one factor the public does not have full information about: the cost of the series. Run or Die is an action production with a top-tier cast and a story set across several European locations. A second season could therefore entail significant costs, especially considering the action elements and production needs tied to the locations. The issue is that the series’ actual budget is not public. Therefore it cannot be stated that production costs were the sole reason for cancellation. It remains, however, one of the possible explanations.
The situation resembles that of Ponies, a Peacock series with Emilia Clarke and Haley Lu Richardson. Even in that case, it was a production that achieved solid audience results and a high critic score, but was canceled without an immediately definitive explanation. One could say the same about the more recent Spider-Noir featuring Nicolas Cage, also canceled despite solid results.
The plot and cast of Run or Die
The series centered on Judith Burton, played by Hannah Waddingham, and Debbie Claybourne, played by Octavia Spencer. The two are best friends and think they know everything about each other. The situation changes when Debbie discovers that Judith is hiding a secret far bigger than expected: she is an international assassin. When a mission goes terribly wrong and a mysterious figure tied to Judith’s past returns to her life, the two women are forced to flee together. What follows is a journey across Europe during which they must elude law enforcement, professional assassins, and dangerous criminals. The cast also included Ed Skrein, Calam Lynch, Savannah Steyn, Jamie Parker, Jacky Ido, Sylvia Hoeks and Bill Nighy. Created by Tessa Coates, with Matt Miller as showrunner and Peyton Reed directing. It’s worth noting that the storytelling structure of the first season suggested the story would continue; the eight episodes concluded with several questions and cliffhangers, leaving room for a possible second chapter.
Run or Die could continue elsewhere?
According to Deadline, Paramount Television Studios, which produced the series, is reportedly exploring pitching it to other platforms or networks, keeping alive the possibility of a revival. At present, no new buyer has been announced, and, above all, no official, detailed explanation has been provided for Prime Video’s decision to halt the series. If another platform were to decide to acquire the series, Judith and Debbie could still have more story to tell. For now, however, the future of Run or Die remains up in the air.
