Following Adam and the remarkable The Blue Caftan, the Moroccan director Maryam Touzani returns to cinema with a new film: it will indeed be in theaters from September 17 with her latest work, Calle Malaga, distributed by Movies Inspired about a year after its presentation in the Horizons section of the Venice Film Festival 2025, where it won the audience prize. The film’s lead is the esteemed Spanish actress Carmen Maura, who here takes on the role of a woman who, deeply attached to her roots, to her identity and to belonging, rediscovers passion when she least expects it. This is the official plot:
Maria Angeles, a 79-year-old Spanish woman, lives alone in Tangier, Morocco, enjoying her daily routine. However, her life is upended when her daughter arrives from Madrid to sell the apartment where she has always lived. Determined to stay, she does everything possible to reclaim her home and her possessions and, unexpectedly, she rediscovers love and sensuality.
“Calle Malaga rises from the deep need to reconnect with my memories, to explore them and bring them back to life. I believe that what we create is the echo of the traces that life leaves inside us”, said Maryam Touzani, who is the director and screenwriter of the film.
