Carrie Continues: Prime Video Officially Orders Season 2

Mike Flanagan will spend a little more time in the dark world of Carrie White, just as his wishes foretold. Prime Video has given the go-ahead to produce a second season of Carrie, the studio’s adaptation of the famous novel of the same name by Stephen King, a horror classic. The renewal arrives just two weeks after the release of the inaugural cycle, warmly welcomed by audiences and critics alike, and it reinforces the streaming service’s growing trend of bringing to screen stories centered on young adult protagonists, bolstered by consistently positive numbers, as shown by the recently renewed Elle, One Year After Another, Off Campus, and Sterling Point – The Island of Secrets.

Carrie: Mike Flanagan’s adaptation and the audience reception

Carrie tells the story of a marginalized teenager who discovers she possesses supernatural powers as she confronts bullying, religious fanaticism, and the cruelty of others. The girl has spent much of her life isolated from the world, under the control of her mother Margaret, a deeply religious woman obsessed with sin. After the sudden death of her father, Carrie finds herself thrust into a public high school, where she must face classmates who are often cruel and a social environment she does not know.

At school she becomes a target of humiliations and bullying, intensified by the era of social media, which allows episodes of cruelty to spread quickly and become public. Meanwhile, Carrie discovers she possesses a terrifying power: telekinesis, the ability to move and manipulate objects with the power of her mind alone. When emotions run too high, she struggles to control it. The situation escalates when Emaline, a mysterious girl who seems to understand her, enters and encourages her to stop repressing her anger. Carrie thus begins to confront not only her persecutors but also the weight of a power that could transform her into something very dangerous.

Starring Summer H. Howell, the series quickly climbed Prime Video’s weekly charts, reaching the top spot in more than 100 countries worldwide. “Carrie is winning over both Stephen King’s longtime fans and a new generation, including the young adult audience and international viewers, with a particular strength among the female audience,” said Peter Friedlander, head of the television division of Amazon MGM Studios. “This demonstrates the timeless power of this story and underscores the broad reach of Mike Flanagan’s reinvention of this iconic franchise. We are excited about how he and Stephen plan to develop the story.”

Flanagan added: “For fifty years, audiences have known and loved Carrie White’s story. From the outset, we envisioned a narrative that went far beyond the prom, and I am incredibly grateful to Stephen for the trust and support he has shown us as we explore what could happen next.” King, one of the series’ executive producers, commented: “I can’t wait for the audience to discover what the future holds for Carrie White. Mike Flanagan and I are excited about what lies ahead. It will surely be thrilling.”
