Changing Careers Is Scary, But These 3 TV Series Will Give You the Push You Need to Do It

When you have the sense that you’re no longer at ease where you are (whether at home or at work) it might be time to do something to change. Everything that brings discomfort needs to be confronted. You can’t expect that suffocating feeling to disappear on its own, but you must face it even when you believe it to be an insurmountable task. For instance, someone who is tired of their job and hasn’t yet found the right motivation to make meaningful changes but would like to, could find strong inspiration by diving into these three TV series that we hope can provide the push you need.

Tired of Your Job? 3 Motivational TV Series to Find the Courage to Start Over

Shrinking

The life of Jimmy is far from flawless. Jimmy is a psychologist, yet he can’t genuinely help anyone because his own life has fallen apart after a tragic accident claimed his wife. Trapped in grief within a self-destructive loop, Jimmy must summon the courage to face life and, to do so, he restarts right at work, breaking the patterns and bending every ethical rule as he stumbles forward. Jimmy decides that it’s time to talk to his patients without filters and see where all of this will lead them. It doesn’t always work, and time bears witness, but more often than not this reckless choice becomes a catalyst for change not just for his patients, but for himself as well. In this case Shrinking, currently made up of three seasons on Apple TV, it perfectly embodies the idea of starting from zero when you have little to lose and shows how, to reinvent oneself, you must question those traditional methods, embrace your vulnerability, and grant yourself the time to heal and be reborn even through chaos.

Girlboss

Comprising a single season, Girlboss draws inspiration from a real story—the tale of Sophia Amoruso who recounted her journey in a memoir titled #Girlboss. Streaming on Netflix in 2017, created by Kay Cannon and starring Britt Robertson, Girlboss follows Sophia, a vintage-clothes enthusiast who decides to launch her online shop and becomes an unlikely entrepreneur. Her online empire, Nasty Gal, is a gamble, but it shows how the protagonist rejects society’s expectations and the security of a steady job to build a custom life. Starting over doesn’t mean you won’t make mistakes, but the heroine must confront the cost of inexperience and others’ cynicism—details that test her resolve.

The Bear

Finished with a fifth season on Disney+, The Bear tells the story of a young chef with a bright future who drops everything to take over the family restaurant after a personal tragedy. His brother has died, and Carmy returns home to oversee the restaurant in Chicago. Here, change is driven by a high-paced environment, the weight of debts, and emotional resilience. Carmy wants to save the business from collapse, but he also refuses to give up on his dream and fights hard to realize it. He aims to purge the chaos and toxicity of the kitchen by pursuing respect, order, and discipline, yet not forgetting his own traumas; rather, he uses them to build something authentic. Created by Christopher Storer, The Bear has earned multiple accolades at the Emmys and the Golden Globes.
