Charlie Hunnam stars in a tale of crime, brotherhood, power, loyalty, and self-destruction. No, we’re not about to see him again in Sons of Anarchy, the series that made us fall in love with him as an actor, but in something that, in more than one way, resembles it. We’re talking about Criminal, the new crime drama for which Prime Video has announced its release date, January 13, 2027, and has released the first trailer. Probably there’s no better way to start the year. Not only because it’s the awaited adaptation of a masterpiece, the eponymous graphic novel written by Ed Brubaker and illustrated by Sean Phillips, but also because it boasts a star-studded cast that includes Emilia Clarke, Luke Evans, Richard Jenkins, Adria Arjona, Patrick J. Adams, Garrett Hedlund, and many others.
Criminal: the plot of the new TV series with Charlie Hunnam
Created by Brubaker himself, who also serves as co-showrunner with Jordan Harper (Hightown), Criminal tells a brutal story that begins with two friends, Leo Patterson (Hunnam) and Ricky Lawless (Gus Halper). The former is trying to carve his way out of the criminal world he grew up in, while the latter is determined to follow in his father’s footsteps, a legendary outlaw. When Tracy (Evans), Ricky’s older brother, returns home after serving in the army, the tragic past of their family resurfaces along with him. In their lives there are also Greta (Arjona), a sharp-tongued car thief who belongs to Leo’s past, and Mallory (Clarke), Ricky’s girlfriend, worried about what he might do to survive. Shootouts, robberies, and tormented loves mark their days. But will anyone manage to get out alive?
The story is divided into two parts. In the first, titled Coward, Leo and Ricky find themselves hunted by a murder dating back to their childhood and by a botched robbery; events that force them to confront a past from which they cannot escape. The second, Lawless, jumps back twenty years, when Tracy chose the army over prison, leaving everything behind. Then, when his brother Ricky becomes too entangled with the wrong people, Tracy is forced to return to the life he had fled and to face what it really means to be a Lawless.
The rest of the cast includes Kadeem Hardison (All at College), John Hawkes (Eastbound & Down), Logan Browning (Dear White People), Michael Mando (Better Call Saul), Taylor Selé (BMF), Chris Diamantopoulos (Dark Matter), Marvin Jones III (Black Lightning) and Pat Healy (Station 19).
