Chicago P.D. Finds Replacement for Agent Kevin Atwater: Who Is Penny Watts?

The departure of Agent Kevin Atwater left a void in District 21 that Chicago P.D. did not hesitate to fill. This week’s episode of the NBC airings for the show’s fourteenth season introduced a new character portrayed by Naiqui Macabroad, an actor best known for his work on StartUp and, more recently, for Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed. In the role of Agent Donovan ‘Penny’ Watts, Macabroad effectively stepped into the shoes of LaRoyce Hawkins, who had exited the series about two weeks prior.

Who is Penny Watts, the new Chicago P.D. officer?

In the season’s second episode—spoiler alert—Atwater bids farewell to his Chicago family and heads south to Georgia after a revelatory case. Having just become a father and finding it hard to balance this new life with his job, the agent is struck by a bullet (luckily stopped by his protective vest) and must inform a parent about their child’s death. He thus expresses a wish to spend more time at home. And when he mentions the possibility of teaching at the academy, his superior informs him of a vacancy at the Atlanta facility.

His replacement, Penny Watts, is introduced in the fourth episode as an officer who stands out for his courage in tackling dangerous, high-tension interventions. The young man proves to be particularly effective in on-the-ground work, thanks to his sociable nature and the connections he has built with key figures in the community. Watts works closely with Voight (Jason Beghe) and the Intelligence Unit following a murder in District 11, his patrol area. By the end of the day, Voight is impressed enough to recruit him into his squad.

In Italy, the fourteenth season of Chicago P.D. will launch by the end of the year on Sky and streaming NOW, alongside the new seasons of Chicago Fire and Chicago Med.
