Chicago P.D.: LaRoyce Hawkins Leaves the Show — What Happened to Kevin?

The news that had sent shivers down the spines of Chicago P.D. fans dates back to last summer: LaRoyce Hawkins would lay down the badge of his character, agent Kevin Atwater, in the fourteenth season. The moment arrived last night, in NBC’s second episode, in which the reasons behind this departure were revealed. In Italy, the new run of episodes will arrive later this year on Sky and for streaming on NOW. So, if spoilers aren’t for you, it’s time to leave the page.

Kevin Atwater Out of Chicago P.D.: What Happened in Episode 4×02?

The exit of Hawkins and his character marks a significant turning point for Chicago P.D., since we’re talking about one of the last long-standing faces remaining on the show since its very first episode in 2014. For over 250 episodes, Atwater has stood out as a cop with a big heart, whose grind brought him ever closer to the Intelligence Unit, until he finally became part of it. In the previous season, it seemed Atwater had even found love with officer Tasha Fox (Karen Obilom), a familiar face from the police academy. Their relationship, however, did not last long, given her decision to leave Chicago for a job in Miami, and his choice not to follow her. Yet, in the finale, Tasha returned, revealing to him, surprisingly, that she was expecting a child by him.

As one might expect, season 14 opened chaotically for Atwater. Tasha went into labor and our protagonist found himself torn between life as a father and life as a policeman. Following a particularly complex case, during which he was struck by a bullet—fortunately stopped by his ballistic vest—Atwater had to tell a father that his son had died. At that moment, something shifted inside him. Speaking with Voight (Jason Beghe), he expressed the wish to spend more time at home. When he mentioned the possibility of teaching at the academy, the head informed him of a vacancy at the Atlanta academy.

Thus, Atwater bid farewell to his Chicago family and headed to Georgia, with his new family by his side. “A father who wasn’t there loses his son; a father who is there chooses to continue to be there,” Hawkins wrote on Instagram in a post showing the promo for Don’t Blink, the second episode. The fact that Atwater remains part of the living world, not taken for granted for a series like Chicago P.D., leaves the door open to a possible return in the future. But only time will tell.
