Coach: Ty Burrell Stars in New Reboot Attempt

More than ten years have passed since NBC ordered a sequel series to Coach, the well-known ’90s sitcom featuring Craig T. Nelson as the coach of a college football team. The show, focused on Hayden Fox’s son, brought back nearly the entire original cast, including Nelson himself, but it was canceled after the production of the pilot when the outcome was judged not entirely satisfactory. Now the network is giving it another go, with a reboot led by one of the stars of the most successful comedies in recent years, Ty Burrell of Modern Family.

Coach tries to return to TV with a brand-new story

Written by brothers Daniel and Matthew Libman, co-creators of Peacock’s Mr. Throwback, the new Coach follows the tale of a legendary coach — the character played by Burrell — who returns home to Minnesota to overhaul the basketball program at his old university and to reconnect with his community.

The project therefore takes a different route from the previous attempt, keeping the setting in Minnesota but centering on a character who, at least on the surface, does not appear to be tied to Hayden Fox, though he could exist in the same universe. According to Deadline, Burrell will also serve as an executive producer alongside the Libmans.
