It is inevitable that the cancellation decided three years ago, then thwarted, will forever weigh on the aura of the entertaining live-action/mixed-media film Coyote vs. Acme by Dave Green, a bold tribute to the comic tradition of the Looney Tunes, with Wile E. Coyote at center stage. In this video interview with the two real-life performers, Will Forte (Wile E. Coyote’s lawyer in the suit against ACME) and Lana Condor (his trainee), we could only begin from a sense of resurgence, for a movie that seemed destined for oblivion and was then saved. We then asked them about the genesis of this peculiar story, about its themes (yes, they’re very much present!), and about the way of filming on set for a film that will feature the cartoons in post-production.

We know that Wile E. Coyote never manages to catch Road Runner, but will it really be all due to bad luck? Could it be that this infamous company ACME, which peddles improbable and bust-prone gadgets by mail-order, isn’t reliable at all? Convinced of this, Wile E. turns to the small-time lawyer Kevin (Will Forte), who helps cartoon characters sue the mega-corporation for damages. Yet Wile E. wants to seek maximum damages for ALL these years of defective gadgets, so Kevin begins to fear, spurred only by his idealistic trainee Paige (Lana Condor). The opposing side is represented by a true shark, the court’s heavyweight Buddy Crane (John Cena), who must safeguard the powerful image of ACME. Kevin’s mission seems impossible, but he might take a cue from Wile E., unbending when it comes to bending without ever breaking.
Directed by Dave Green from a screenplay by Samy Burch, based on a concept also touched by James Gunn, Coyote vs. Acme is a witty comic mystery that blends smart (and very timely) satire with a playful homage to the iconic Looney Tunes: brace yourself for a parade of cameos, including Porky Pig, Daffy Duck, Bugs Bunny, and many more.
