A decade after the drama of pursuing true love returns for these crazy-rich Asians. HBO has surprised everyone with the announcement that ‘Crazy Rich Asians’, the romantic comedy that took the world by storm back in 2018, will come back as a direct sequel. But not as a film, mind you, but as a one-hour-per-episode television series.
The streaming platform has confirmed that we will have a total of eight episodes that will comprise the season, but they haven’t revealed whether it will be a limited mini-series or if doors are open to future seasons. For now we know they will expand the universe of Kevin Kwan’s books, the original author of the novel on which ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ is based, which spawned two more books after the success of the first story.
The cast returns
We couldn’t have a sequel without its stars, and we can breathe easy on that front. Constance Wu, Henry Golding and Ronny Chieng will reprise their roles as the focal points of the story, forming the main cast. They will be joined by the magnificent Michelle Yeoh, who will return in her role as the matriarch of the Sung-Young clan, though her presence will be smaller than that of the leading protagonists.
On the producers’ side, we can rest easy, as the project is in good hands. The director of the original film, Jon M. Chu, will return as executive producer alongside Kevin Kwan, Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson. To top it off, Adele Lim will serve as the showrunner of the series after having written the screenplay for the original movie, ensuring that the series stays on the right track when production begins in 2027.
A Look at the Novels
Understanding the show’s future is fairly straightforward if we take a look at Kevin Kwan’s works. If the original film covered ‘Crazy Rich Asians’, now it would be the turn of the other two books that compose the trilogy, ‘China Rich Girlfriend’ and ‘Rich People Problems’. Eight hours of a series could provide enough time to cover both books or the producers might opt to adapt only one of them, opening the possibility for a second season to finish telling the full story. We’ll have to wait a while to see which direction the project will take.
