Dakota Fanning, a former child prodigy whose career and life have been remarkably steady, recalled on the Happy Sad Confused podcast what she felt when she was asked to portray the vampire Jane of the Volturi in the The Twilight Saga, one of the roles that marked the transition from adolescence to adulthood. In truth, she just had fun, because the very nature of her character didn’t put her in the same spotlight as the other cast members. No overexposure, but the satisfaction of being able to say “I was there too” to her peers!
Dakota Fanning Took Twilight Lightly, Because She Could
Dakota Fanning, now 32, who has recently appeared in the horror films The Watchers and Vicious: The Three Gifts of Evil, has only fond memories of The Twilight Saga, in which she played Jane specifically in The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009), The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (2010) and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 (2012). As part of the Volturi, she was a bit on the periphery of the rest of the cast, but that allowed her to enjoy herself without feeling the weight of fandom expectations: “It was a huge thing, the kind of thing everyone talked about. At the time I was in high school. I went to a high school like any other, and everyone was obsessed. It was a big deal. […] Playing Jane was amazing, and there I met Kristen [Stewart], who is now one of my best friends. […] They themselves had no idea it would blow up like this. They thought they were making a little vampire movie. […] Then when we went to Comic-Con and there were those hordes of fans… it was mega-intense. Being part of it, well, let’s say I took the best parts for myself. Because I was just a small character who came and went, I didn’t feel anxious. I had fun and that was it, a perfect situation, right?”
The saga, meanwhile, is set to restart in the form of a Netflix animated series, told from Edward’s perspective, based on Stephanie Meyer’s “Midnight Sun” (2020, published by Fazi Editore here in Italy).
