Marvel Studios’ series are undergoing a major transformation. After experimenting with somewhat more traditional seasons built around a central storyline, the experiment that the House of Ideas was conducting with its star superhero from Hell’s Kitchen comes to an end. According to media reports, ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ will conclude with its third season, which finished filming two months ago.
The adventures of the most famous lawyer in the superhero realm, with the blessing of his colleague She-Hulk, will not extend beyond what this year has to offer. And it happens under somewhat odd circumstances, for according to some internal sources, the showrunner Dario Scardapane is no longer working on the series. This, in the midst of postproduction, raises a few eyebrows.
Who’s in Charge Now?
Details about Scardapane’s exit from the project remain unknown. His contract with Disney had reportedly been up for renewal, but for various reasons there was no continuity, and without the creative mind the postproduction process rests on someone else to guide it to completion. It’s also striking to learn that the series will wrap two months after filming finished, a detail we were completely unaware of.
The reality about ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ is that this isn’t simply the cancellation of a three-season show, but the culmination of a project with more than eleven years of history. Matt Murdock’s adventures began on Netflix with ‘Daredevil’, continued in ‘The Defenders’, and now end with the Disney+ series. We can’t know whether there will be a future for the character beyond this show, but we should not rule out a cameo in future projects as long as Charlie Cox remains willing to play the hero.
A City Without Vigilantes
The story of ‘Daredevil’ up to now has been that of a blind superhero fighting for justice both in his civilian life and by night, disguised as the devil. Matt Murdock’s territory has been the streets and the fight against organized crime, an aspect that heroes like the Avengers tend to overlook. This facet of Marvel’s universe is now left in the hands of the good old Spider-Man, who, at least in his latest film, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, has focused on safeguarding the citizens of New York.
