The good-natured Tom Cruise is feeling particularly nostalgic lately. After successfully bringing Top Gun: Maverick back to theaters, he is already plotting a third installment with himself as the lead, and that’s only a small glimpse of the actor’s future. There are more projects in the works, and one of the most surprising aligns with Top Gun in the sense that it continues one of the franchises from the early peak of his success.
The actor revealed via Instagram that the sequel to ‘Days of Thunder’ is in full swing and that its production is moving ahead smoothly. Not only that, but he has dared to announce a release date: the summer of 2028. With this, anyone could think that these are big news, but the biggest surprise is the person accompanying him in the post. A new co-star will join to turn him into the best pilot in the world, or perhaps to pass the baton, who knows. Anne Hathaway joins the cast, to the surprise of many.
From Ithaca to the Road
The official Cruise post leaves many mysteries in the air, and none that are going to be answered soon. With the photo the two actors have taken together, there is only the invitation to look forward to the 2028 release, nothing more. The information since Cruise made clear he wanted a sequel is scarce, although there are some reports that Jonathan Levine may have been in talks with Paramount to direct the feature. As for the rest, everything remains unknown.
What role Hathaway might have in this is important to keep in mind. The original story featured Nicole Kidman as Cruise’s co-star and love interest, but she wasn’t a racer on the track; she was a doctor. By the time it premieres, nearly forty years will have passed since the original, and time is moving on for the actor, so it would be logical to point to Anne as Cole Trickle’s protégé. However, this is only speculation.

Time to Take Home the Gold
Both actors have a long list of upcoming projects secured, with Hathaway especially in demand in Hollywood after the success of ‘The Odyssey’ and ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’. Her next project to watch most closely is the third installment of ‘Princess Diaries’, which continues to be in development somewhere in Hollywood, albeit with fewer actresses than we would like.
