He leaves behind one of the finest actors in portraying villains who are thoroughly evil, the kind we loved to hate. The ever-distinguished Tim Curry, antagonist of multiple films such as ‘The Muppet Treasure Island’, ‘Home Alone 2: Lost in New York’ and the original miniseries of ‘It’, passed away last Tuesday, August 25, at his home in Los Angeles. He was 80 years old.
Curry suffered a stroke in 2013 that significantly affected the actor for the rest of his days. As a consequence, he was left in a wheelchair and his ability to speak was severely limited. This medical problem forced him to largely retire from cinema and voice acting, his two great passions, with only a few and special appearances in notable works such as the musical sequel to ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’.
A villain to remember
Curry’s career began in the United Kingdom as a theatre actor in musicals at the end of the sixties. After achieving some success in London, he decided to try his luck on Broadway, where his reception was initially somewhat tepid. Fortunately, he found Hollywood success with the adaptation of ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’, after which he returned to theatre with much greater success. He continued working on both stages for years.
One of the arenas where he stood out the most was as a voice actor, where he landed some unforgettable roles across all kinds of films and series aimed at younger audiences. From there he gained his great popularity as a villain in children’s films, where some of his best work stands out. He also lent his talent to multiple video games before his retirement, notably as the original voice actor for the Gabriel Knight saga.
Always Private
One of Curry’s distinctive traits was his unwavering wish to keep his private life separate from his work, withholding as much as possible details about what he did off-camera. This has been respected to this day, where all details about his personal life in these ten years and the days leading up to his death remain confidential. He never married nor had children, as far as is known.
