A black velvet cloak, glittering scorpions, and a story spanning generations of Hollywood stars. At the Rome premiere of All’s Fair, Kris Jenner wore an item that held more than a prestigious name: it belonged to Elizabeth Taylor. Its journey won’t end on the red carpet, because Kim Kardashian also wore it for the first episode of the series’ second season.
A thread that ties everything together is an event organized by another unforgettable Hollywood icon, Grace Kelly. A tale that intrigued the series creator, Ryan Murphy, so much that it prompted him to suggest an idea for the screenplay.
From Elizabeth Taylor to Kris Jenner: the story of the Scorpio Ball cloak
To reconstruct the story, one must go back to 1969, when Grace Kelly, by then Princess of Monaco, celebrated her fortieth birthday with the Scorpio Ball, a gala dedicated to her astrological sign.
Among the guests was Elizabeth Taylor, who for the occasion wore a spectacular cloak signed Tiziani Roma. Crafted in black velvet, the garment was adorned with scorpion-shaped embroidery and rhinestones on the front and on the hood.
Decades later, the cloak entered Kris Jenner’s collection, bringing it back into the spotlight at the Rome Film Festival. Its sale in 2011 was reported by the press at around $75,000.
Kim Kardashian wearing it in All’s Fair: the story inspired Ryan Murphy
The connection to the series goes beyond simply choosing a look for the premiere. Kim Kardashian revealed that her mother, the executive producer of All’s Fair, lent her the cloak to wear as the attorney Allura Grant.
When Ryan Murphy learned that Elizabeth Taylor had flaunted the cloak at Grace Kelly’s ball, he decided to weave that sentiment into the series: Allura would also host a Scorpio Ball.
Between gowns and exclusive fêtes, the line between the protagonists’ wardrobes and the outfits of their characters becomes even thinner.
Kim Kardashian also chooses an archival look for the red carpet
Kris Jenner wasn’t the only one turning to fashion’s past for the Rome night. Kim Kardashian likewise selected an archival Yves Saint Laurent gown, featuring a striking leopard print.
The look, curated by Law Roach, renowned for his collaboration with Zendaya, blends a fitted silhouette with an animal-print fabric that hardly goes unnoticed. Several recreations place it in the Haute Couture Autumn 1986 collection.
Mother and daughter thus brought to the red carpet two distinct interpretations of the same taste for excess: on one side the dramatic cloak once owned by a cinema legend, on the other a dress that lets the leopard print speak for itself.
Luxurious opulence, rivalries, and showy wardrobes will continue to accompany the protagonists in the second season of All’s Fair, arriving on November 4, 2026, with the first three episodes, followed by a weekly schedule.
Beside Kim Kardashian return Sarah Paulson, Naomi Watts, Glenn Close, Niecy Nash-Betts and Teyana Taylor.
