While on social media he remains a meme sensation thanks to his memorable performance in Modern Family, Eric Stonestreet will try his hand at a far darker role in Dexter: Resurrection. During the series panel at New York Comic-Con, it was confirmed that the actor would reprise the role of the serial killer Rapunzel in the sequel’s second season, which premieres on Paramount+ on October 30.

“I love the element of surprise I feel when people see me in that part,” Stonestreet explained, detailing why he agreed to return as Al Walker/Rapunzel. “I relish the challenge of delivering my best performance. Yet I also appreciate that he’s a family‑oriented man who appears to have it all: things others might envy or desire. I enjoy this duality; it’s really fun to play Al, knowing how monstrous, truly monstrous, he is.”
Interestingly, Stonestreet had his first contact with Dexter before Modern Family, the award‑winning comedy that he helped lead for 11 seasons. “I was a working actor doing every audition I could land,” he recalled. “Back then, the call for Dexter came by fax. I went to Paramount, parked for over an hour and a half, then walked in to meet Clyde Phillips, and he told me, ‘No, thanks’.” The showrunner added: “To be precise: not landing that role in the first season—and if you had landed it, you wouldn’t have been available for the Modern Family audition—things turned out okay.”
Also on the discussion table was Krysten Ritter’s return, despite her character—Lady Vendetta—having died in the previous season. Those present avoided guessing how it would happen, but Phillips noted: “If you’re a fan of the series and you’ve seen New Blood, you’ll know we wrapped the death scene of Michael at the end of that series, and Krysten was declared dead in prison, yet here they both are.” Executive producer Marcos Siega added: “The chemistry was undeniable; while we were shooting Lady Vendetta’s death scene, we all looked at each other and thought, ‘It can’t end like that’. She has a deep impact on Dexter.”
