Diablo, the hugely successful video game from Blizzard Entertainment, will soon arrive on Netflix with an animated adaptation. The series was announced by Johanna Faries, head of the American game studio, during BlizzCon, the major annual convention held in Anaheim, California.
Diablo: what is known about the animated series?
Only a handful of details have been released by Blizzard thus far. In a note published by Variety, it reads: “After decades spent bringing entire universes to life through our games, we are partnering with prominent creative entities to tell even more stories—beyond the boundaries of gaming—on new screens. A new animated series set in the world of Diablo is in development with Netflix. More details will be released in the future, but this is only the beginning: other projects are taking shape within our universes.”
The first Diablo dates back to 1996, while a fifth installment is anticipated for spring 2029. The franchise narrates the eternal conflict between the High Heavens and the Burning Hells, with humanity in Sanctuary caught in the middle. Humans descend from the Nephalem, born from the union of angels and demons, and thus possess extraordinary potential. For this reason Sanctuary and humanity hold a crucial role in the struggle between the two sides. The player generally assumes the role of a powerful human hero who confronts hordes of demons and other supernatural creatures, often finding themselves opposed to the Prime Evils (Diablo, Mephisto, and Baal), the supreme lords of demons.
