Returning to the 19th-century New York of The Gilded Age, the period drama now available on Sky and streaming on NOW and HBO Max, created by Julian Fellowes—the mind behind Downton Abbey. The first episode wastes no time and, in a surprising turn, includes a double cameo that might have slipped by unnoticed. The reason is simple: their screen moment is brief, yet not at all inconsequential.
The Gilded Age 4, did you notice Matt Damon and David Letterman’s cameo?
Perhaps you didn’t catch it, but the premiere of the fourth season of The Gilded Age turns Matt Damon and David Letterman into two finely dressed gentlemen of the 1800s. The Hollywood star and the famed American host appeared fleetingly in the first episode, precisely around the eight-minute mark, seen crossing East 61st Street with determined strides. But how did this unexpected double cameo come about?
It’s not every day that a Oscar-winning actor and a renowned television host are recruited for a TV series merely as extras, yet that is exactly what happened in the fourth season of The Gilded Age. The pair, all polished and suited, crossed the street in front of George Russell’s house, but their cameo lasted only a handful of seconds, fulfilling one of David Letterman’s long-held wishes. To shed more light on this, showrunner My Next Guest Needs No Introduction (in Italian Non c’è bisogno di presentazioni – Con David Letterman) producer Isabel Richardson, and The Gilded Age executive producer Kate Churchill laid out the details in an interview with Volture.

Apparently, David Letterman had wished to appear as an extra, a possibility previously explored for other projects but never realized—until now. For The Gilded Age, he could count on the support of Matt Damon, who, after all, began his film career precisely as an extra alongside Ben Affleck—an anecdote Damon learned about thanks to an interview conducted on his show. Crafting their looks proved a fun exercise, according to Churchill, especially in David Letterman’s case: “He has this fabulous beard,” she admitted. The situation was different for Matt Damon, who, for the occasion, wore period-appropriate mustaches after shaving the beard he sported in Odyssey. The cameo idea was pitched to Julian Fellowes and HBO’s CEO Casey Bloys and was deemed “hilarious.” Since it was a brief cameo, the names of both actors were not included in the credits.
That wasn’t a trick of the eye! That was David Letterman and Matt Damon as background actors on ‘The Gilded Age’ 😍 The legendary stars played two gentleman silently crossing the street in the season four premiere, delighting everyone with their quick appearance. The moment fulfils the iconic 79-year-old talk show host’s dream of over 50 years of being a background actor ✨ “Matt Damon was laughing so hard throughout the day,” showrunner Isabel Richardson told Vulture.
