If the current Hollywood trend is to tell superhero stories in unconventional ways, Disney+ is stepping up by announcing the greenlight for Darkwing Duck, a revival of the cult animated series from the early 1990s centered on the adventures of the titular masked duck superhero and his alter ego Drake Mallard. The new series, forthcoming, is penned by Sean Tretta (Star Trek: Picard) and Borja Peña Gorostegui (Lost & Crowned) and features a remarkable voice cast, including Mark Hamill in the lead and the five-time Emmy winner Seth Rogen portraying the equally iconic Launchpad McQuack, who in Italy is best known as Jet McQuack.
Darkwing Duck: The Plot of the New Animated Series
The story conceived by Tretta and Gorostegui, who inherit the mantle from Tad Stones and will also serve as executive producers with Rogen, Evan Goldberg and others, follows a Darkwing Duck who over the past 35 years has been trapped in his worst nightmare: an alternate world that has never heard of his heroic feats. Now, a teenager named Duckie — who knows everything about his heroic past — steps forward to drag this ego-fueled vigilante back into battle. Together, the unlikely duo will face dangers and old foes like Negaduck and Megavolt, reuniting with allies Jet McQuack, Ocalina Mallard (Gosalyn Mallard) and Morgana MaCawber to save the inner universe.
In addition to Hamill and Rogen, the series’ voice cast also includes Lizzy Caplan (Masters of Sex) in the role of Ocalina, Lilimar (Inside Out 2) as Duckie, Dan Stevens (Solar Opposites) as Glade McTowers, Tiffany Shepis (Star Trek: Picard) as Rosa, Kathryn Newton (Avengers: Doomsday) as Firecracker, Teo Briones (Chucky) as Timb, Tyler Dean Flores (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) as Pondsy, Katie Rich (Saturday Night Live) as Agent Shanks and Nat Faxon (Loot – A Fortune) as Agent Webb.
“Disney said ‘Let’s do something daring,’ and we replied: ‘Absolutely yes,'” said the Point Grey Pictures team. Stones, who contributed his input, commented, “Like any other fan of the original series, I am thrilled to see Darkwing return to being dangerous in a brand-new series. The new creative team has definitely amplified action and humor, without losing sight of the heart at the core of Disney’s style. This series places DW within the literary tradition of figures such as Robin Hood, Zorro and Sherlock Holmes: heroes whose stories have been reinterpreted by numerous authors across different media. The essence of these characters has been explored by placing them in eras, relationships and even new universes. Regardless of time and place, Darkwing Duck will always appear between one cloud of blue smoke and the other to seize the scene.”
