Disney has had this year’s D23 fantastic, full of announcements on all fronts. Marvel delivered a series of fantastic announcements, and Star Wars hasn’t been left short either with films and series all around. After such a deluge of news, one might think there aren’t many updates on the animation front, but far from it: Disney seized the moment to talk about its ten upcoming animated feature films. Not much.
Pixar, Disney’s powerhouse
The studio that showed the most muscle at D23 was Pixar, no doubt about it. They didn’t settle for simply previewing four of their future projects, but took advantage of the moment to offer a first look at these films that will revolutionize cinema.
On one hand, they have two highly anticipated sequels on slate. ‘Coco 2’ is the furthest on the calendar for a release, projected for November 2029. Early images already show how our young Miguel Rivera has grown and faces new life challenges, mainly Ernesto de la Cruz’s revenge plot with Benjamin Bratt. They also took the opportunity to tease a bit of ‘The Incredibles 3′, with director Peter Sohn announcing that “it’s the kids’ turn” to take the lead.
Where they shone the most has been with their original feature films. A new look at ‘Gatto’ has revealed more about the Italian cat mafia that will hit theaters in March 2027. Additionally, the studio announced ‘Ghost Market’, a new film about very hungry ghosts directed by Trevos Jimenez and Jesse Andrews. It will reach cinemas in 2028.
Animation Everywhere
Disney has also brought animation from within its own house. A fresh preview of ‘Spell: Welcome to Hexe’ has confirmed Jodie Foster and Walton Goggins in its cast. Besides this, they officially announced the production of ‘Zootopia 3’ and delved deeper into ‘Frozen 3’, their most anticipated sequels.
They weren’t content with seven films; they spoke about two of Disney’s bigger-scale productions. On one hand, ‘Ice Age: Boiling Point’ continues to take shape as the sixth installment of the saga with a release date set for February 2027, and after that they unveiled a trailer for the promising ‘Bluey: The Movie’, the 3D leap for the children’s series.
