The versatile Donald Glover, known on television for his work as an actor and/or writer in Atlanta, Community and Mr. & Mrs. Smith, the latter of which earned him two Emmys, is collaborating with Netflix to develop a television adaptation of the video game series PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, commonly shortened to PUBG. Glover will star in, direct, write, and serve as executive producer for the project.
PUBG: From the Video Game to the TV Series
Based on the Battle Royale genre, a type or mode of video games whose aim is survival in an arena where several players face off against one another, PUBG is a hugely popular franchise that began in 2017 with PUBG: Battlegrounds. In the game, up to 100 participants compete solo or in squads on a map with the goal of remaining the last survivors.
Glover will write and produce the live-action series together with his brother Stephen Glover, who has also been at his side in Atlanta and Mr. & Mrs. Smith. The production team also includes Oscar-nominated Michael Schaefer, known for The Martian, with whom the actor has collaborated on Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Swarm. On Netflix, the project joins the other adaptations of the famous video games Assassin’s Creed, Gears of War, Minecraft and Clash of Clans, namely with a series, a film, and two animated series.
