On Sunday, November 8, Diwali—the famous Hindu festival of lights—will be celebrated. A few days later, on the 19th of the same month, Italian cinemas will welcome a film distributed by Eagle Pictures that has a deep connection with Hindu culture, indeed everything to do with it: we are talking about Ramayana: The Birth of a Legend, the first part of an ambitious and spectacular duology that brings to the big screen the long, ancient epic poem of the same name, one of the foundational texts of the Indian cultural canon. Dating back at least to 1500 BCE (though some place it as early as the 4th century BCE), the Ramayana is also one of the “sacred” texts of Hinduism and of Dharmic philosophy, capable of guiding anyone who reads and studies it to live their life to the fullest and offering life lessons applicable to any era and context. The story told is that of Rama, a prince devoted to sacrifice; of Ravana, an immortal king driven by revenge; and of the prophecy that binds their destinies.
The film was directed by Nitesh Tiwari, a prominent star in his homeland, and features top-tier actors from Indian cinema: Ranbir Kapoor in the role of Rama; Yash as Ravana; and Sai Pallavi as Sita, Rama’s beautiful wife who is kidnapped by Ravana. The cast also includes Ravie Dubey and Sunny Deol.
