Universal Pictures brings back to Italian theaters, starting from Thursday October 29, the film that in 2001 kicked off one of the most lucrative action franchises of all time: The Fast and the Furious (the original title that, here, loses the articles). It arrived in U.S. cinemas on June 22 of that year, directed by Rob Cohen.
The plot follows undercover agent Brian O’Conner, played by Paul Walker, who infiltrates the world of clandestine Los Angeles street racing to investigate a gang of truck hijackers carrying electronic devices led by Dominic Toretto of Vin Diesel. Between one quarter-mile and another, Brian forms a bond with Dom and his sister Mia Toretto (Jordana Brewster) that will compel him to choose between duty and loyalty. Completing the classic cast are Michelle Rodriguez as Letty Ortiz and Rick Yune in the role of the rival Johnny Tran.
Twenty-five years of racing: how a low-budget film became a seven-billion-dollar empire
When it hit theaters, Fast and Furious was a low-budget action film (a mere $38 million) greeted by critics with a degree of skepticism, yet able to gross over $207 million worldwide thanks to word of mouth from an audience that identified with that garage aesthetic, tinkered engines, and an extended family. From there began an escalation that few franchises can boast. In the following twenty-five years the saga expanded to eleven films, one spin-off, an animated series and several video games, turning Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Michelle Rodriguez into global stars.
The most symbolic milestone remains 2015, when Furious 7, released a few months after Paul Walker’s death, surpassed one and a half billion dollars, becoming the most-watched chapter of the saga. Today the entire franchise totals roughly 7.6 billion dollars in global box office, one of the highest figures in cinema history. Not by chance, just this year the saga officially celebrated a quarter-century with a gala at the Cannes Film Festival, in the company of Diesel, Rodriguez, Brewster, the longtime producer Neal H. Moritz and Meadow Walker, Paul Walker’s daughter.

To accompany the return to the big screen of the chapter that ignited the engine of it all, Universal Pictures Italia released the new Italian trailer for the re-release, featuring some of the iconic shots of the famous final race between Dom and Brian and a montage that traces twenty-five years of speed, family, and nostalgia.
