Fjord: Italian Trailer for Cristian Mungiu’s Palme d’Or Film Starring Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve

At the Cannes Film Festival, Fjord, the new feature from the acclaimed Romanian director Cristian Mungiu, captivated audiences and claimed the Palme d’Or. Set in Norway and led by Sebastian Stan, who delivers a remarkable, metamorphic performance, with Renate Reinsve in the principal roles, it will reach Italian cinemas courtesy of BIM Distribuzione on November 19. The director is one of the most recognized and celebrated figures in European cinema, and at Cannes he has previously earned the Best Film award for 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007), the Best Screenplay award for Beyond the Hills (2012), and the Best Director award for A Father, a Son (2016). He has also received an European Film Award for Best Director and another for Best Film in 2007 for 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days. This is the Italian trailer for Fjord.

Fjord: the film’s plot

Fjord recounts the encounter and the gradual clash between two families living in a remote Norwegian village surrounded by nature, where human relationships are notably intricate. On one side are Mihai (Sebastian Stan), a Romanian immigrant, and Lisbet (Renate Reinsve), his Norwegian partner. On the other side stand Mats, Norwegian, and Mia, Swedish. Their children are the same age and attend the same school. At first, there appears to be a spontaneous friendship between the two couples, united by similar experiences and a life in an isolated community. Yet the apparent harmony begins to waver when deep-seated differences surface, including divergent cultural beliefs, opposing views on education, family dynamics, and the very notion of individual freedom. The idea that Mihai and Lisbet could exert a negative influence on the youngsters prompts Norwegian authorities to conduct thorough investigations, placing the immigrant family at the center of scrutiny and collective judgment. The film intensely and sensitively examines the fragile balance between personal identity and social pressures, between integration and prejudice, challenging the boundaries of tolerance, privacy, and freedom in a society that prides itself on openness but often demands conformity.
