Fjord Official Trailer: Cristian Mungiu’s Film Starring Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve, Palme d’Or at Cannes 2026

On May 23rd, the Romanian director Cristian Mungiu received the Palme d’Or for Best Film at the Cannes Film Festival, the second of his career nearly twenty years after his first Palme for 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days in 2007.
Fjord, this is the title of his new film, is the first project the director shoots outside his homeland and in English, and it will soon be released in Italy by BIM Distribuzione.
Starring in the film is an international cast led by Romanian-American Sebastian Stan and Norwegian Renate Reinsve (a Golden Globe nominee for Sentimental Value).
The film’s story, inspired by several real-life events, follows the Gheorghiu family—a Romanian father, a Norwegian mother, and their five children—who relocate from Bucharest to Lisbet’s hometown, in a fjord. Devout evangelical Christians and wary of modernity, their values clash with the progressive, secular attitudes of Norwegian institutions, embodied by the neighboring Halbergs, whose involvement culminates in the intervention of social services when a schoolteacher notices bruises on the Gheorghiu children’s bodies. In the face of broad suspicion, Mihai, the father, must defend in court not only his parental rights but the equal dignity of his origin culture.
