Fog, Woods, and Secrets: 3 New Mystery TV Series to Watch This Fall

We often associate autumn with cozy evenings on the sofa, accompanied by stories set in dreary, mysterious, sometimes somber settings where nothing is as it seems. Those who love mystery stories and are on the lookout for fairly recent titles will be glad to bookmark these three TV series: two out of three are strictly fresh to streaming and echo the cozy-mystery. Dense fog, endless forests and intermittent rain—are these what you crave most during this period? Then here are three tales set in small isolated communities geographically and emotionally where every unresolved trauma and secret can quickly spill over the limits.

The best mystery-horror TV series to watch in autumn 2026: must-see new releases

Widow’s Bay

Among the 2026 new releases, Widow’s Bay is not to be overlooked, a gripping thriller set on a remote island off New England that seems cursed. The mayor Tom Loftis wants to boost the town’s economy by launching a strong marketing campaign, intentionally ignoring the warnings of locals who know the island’s true nature, but soon Tom is forced to reconsider and backtrack. The apparent tranquility of the place hides ancient superstitions tied to unexplained deaths and a string of disappearances. In this case the fog becomes a wall that cuts the protagonists off from the rest of the world, just as the wild and hostile nature reflects the island’s unconfessable secrets. To date it consists of one season, but a second has already been approved by Apple TV.

Crystal Lake

Fresh on the scene is Crystal Lake, a horror TV series born as a prequel to Friday the 13th, the film franchise that for years accompanied audiences with scares thanks to the presence of Jason Voorhees. The prequel focuses on his mother, Pamela, portrayed by Linda Cardellini, and is set in the picturesque community of Crystal Lake. In this case Pamela is a woman marked by loss, since a year earlier her son Jason died, having drowned in the town’s lake. The arrival of two strangers at her door, seeking answers about her past, will bring to light uncomfortable truths and buried fears. The lake in this instance is the quintessential location, as it embodies all the dramatic tension, shrouded in dense, dark vegetation that becomes the stage for trauma and vengeance. The characters appear to be physically and psychologically isolated. The series is available on HBO Max.

Yaga

Reworking the legend of Baba Yaga, Yaga is among the week’s new offerings on HBO Max. A Canadian horror-mystery created by Kat Sandler, it is set in a small coastal town and follows private investigator Rapp, who investigates the disappearance of Henry Parl, heir to a commercial fishing company. Upon arriving, he encounters a local detective, Carson, who is less than inclined to cooperate, and also meets Katherine, a university professor who shows a weakness for younger men. As the investigation digs deeper, increasingly dark suspicions emerge that also implicate an ancient magic. The cast includes Carrie Anne-Moss, Noah Reid and Clark Backo.
