It makes its Netflix streaming debut on November 25, a film based on a true story from World War II, when, in the wake of Pearl Harbor, four of the greatest stars of American college football decided to enlist in the Marines. Once enlisted, and as they trained with the rest of their comrades for the brutal invasion of Okinawa, these young men took to the field for a legendary game that was played on Christmas Eve 1944 on Guadalcanal between two Marine regiments, and for many of them it was the last game they ever played.
The film telling this story is titled The Mosquito Bowl, starring Nicholas Galitzine, Bill Skarsgård, Ray Nicholson and Tom Francis, and directed by the solid filmmaker Peter Berg, known for Deepwater, Patriots Day, and the acclaimed western series American Primeval. The incident had already been recounted in a book by Buzz Bissinger, which Berg – who had previously worked on the author’s material for Friday Night Lights – adapted together with Mark L. Smith.
