One of the most eagerly awaited adaptations in the upcoming months has finally given faces to its leads. Esther McGregor and Emilio Sakraya, young actors known to audiences for their roles in The Summer of Lost Secrets and Warrior Nun respectively, will portray Violet Sorrengail and Xaden Riorson in Fourth Wing, a Prime Video series based on the best-selling novel of the same name written by Rebecca Yarros—a tale of dragons, love, courage, and destiny.
What Fourth Wing Is About?
Created by Meredith Averill, co-creator of Locke & Key, and produced by Oscar winner Michael B. Jordan (The Sinners) together with Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy (Fallout), Fourth Wing tells a fantasy adventure in which Violet Sorrengail is forced to enter the brutal world of Basgiath Military Academy, where she joins hundreds of candidates who aspire to become the kingdom of Navarre’s elite: the dragon riders. On a path to becoming a historian like her father Asher, the twenty-year-old finds her course altered at the behest of her mother, General Lilith Sorrengail.
Far from the safety of archives where scribes document Navarre’s history and guard its chronicles, Violet must walk the parapet to form a bond with a dragon and undertake a profession that is extraordinarily perilous and often deadly. It is here that she meets Xaden Riorson, a descendant of a rebel faction, a mysterious and brooding cadet capable of bending shadows. The academy’s sole rule is “graduate or die.” Dragons, in fact, do not bond with fragile humans; they incinerate them. And most students would not hesitate to eliminate Violet to improve their own chances of joining Navarre’s elite.
Should the series meet the hoped-for success, the plan is to adapt the remaining novels in The Empyrean series: Iron Flame and Onyx Storm. In the meantime, Yarros is working on a fourth book, still untitled, which will be followed by a fifth. Additionally, the author has recently published a companion volume titled Threshing Day, collecting 13 short stories told from the knights’ perspectives and centered on the moment they met their dragons.
