France at the Oscars with Minotaur

To know which Italian film will compete for the 2027 Academy Award for Best International Feature we will have to wait until September 23, when a dedicated commission will announce the chosen title among the 21 candidates currently in the running. But in the meantime, news is beginning to arrive from other countries: today is France’s turn, which has decided to attempt the victory of the statuette with a film directed by a Russian filmmaker. The French submission to the Academy Awards is indeed Minotaur by Andrej Zvjagincev, the film that at the previous Cannes Film Festival won the Jury Grand Prix. The film was produced by Charles Gillibert (CG Cinéma) and Nathanaël Karmitz (MK2 Productions) and supported by the CNC’s World Cinema Support program.

Libero rifacimento of Stéphane, una moglie infedele by Claude Chabrol, scripted by the director himself with Semën Ljašenko, Minotaur tells the story of Gleb, CEO of a shipping company, who discovers that his wife Galina is cheating on him with Anton, a photographer thirty years younger. All the while he must draft a list of employees to recruit into the Russian army to be invited to the front in Ukraine. For us at Cannes he saw it, Mauro Donzelli, who wrote a fairly enthusiastic review.

Here below, the official trailer of Minotaur, which in Italy will be distributed soon by BIM.
